Rising Stars of Conservation:

Maan Barua
has been an advisor to Elephant Family since 2007, and is a D.Phil. candidate conducting interdisciplinary research in Geography with a focus on Conservation. He is an important member of our team as a conservation star of tomorrow and we’re supporting him every step of the way.

In 2007, he completed his BSc. in Zoology at Dibrugarh University in Assam, India, and went on to complete an MSc. in Biodiversity, Conservation & Management at the School of Geography & the Environment in Oxford. Maan is on a Clarendon Scholarship, and is a Senior Hulme Scholar at Brasenose College.

Maan's research attempts to address several key theoretical concerns in Conservation and Geography:

  • To recognise the place of non-human actors in the fabric of social life, and explore new possibilities that arise when their part is registered on our accounts of the world
  • To re-examine the relationship between conservation theory and practice, and to understand how interventions are realised and assessed
  • To 'locate' culture in practices and frameworks of conservation to cross-fertilise ideas, and to enable the emergence of an attuned conservation science, incorporating culture

His current fields of research include:

  • Conservation beyond Protected Areas
  • Human-Animal Interactions
  • Culture & Conflicts
  • Developing Interdisciplinary Methods in Conservation Science

Maan runs a reading group on Human-Wildlife Conflict for the MSc. in Biodiversity, Conservation & Management at the School of Geography & the Environment.

He also teaches the Conservation option for undergraduates studying the Human Sciences at Oxford.
