Elephant Corridor Surveys: North Bengal

The Tirunelli-Kudrakote corridor is by no means the only strip of vital elephant habitat under threat. And so we’re working with the Wildlife Trust of India to determine where – and how – our resources would be best spent.

In 2010, the Trust will conduct intensive surveys on three important potential corridors, chosen from the following shortlist:

  • Upper Dihing East – Upper Dihing West Block at Bogapani
  • Upper Dihing East – Upper Dihing West Block between Golai-Pawai
  • Kalapahar-Daigurung
  • Kotha-Burhidihing

North Bengal, IndiaThese surveys will draw on a wealth of biological and social information to determine the corridors’ viability, and will contribute to the most up-to-date review of elephant corridors across the country.

The three corridors selected will be taken up for protection, and act as a lifeline for hundreds of elephants long in the future.
