The Lower Kinabatangan is one of the four most important ranges for the Bornean elephant.

As ever, human-elephant conflict is widespread. To improve relations, the Elephant Conservation Unit roots itself firmly in the local community and recruits its six members of staff from surrounding villages.
Its approach is collaborative – and extremely successful. In fact, it has reduced instances of human-elephant conflict by almost 90% in the past few years.
We’ve been working with the Hutan and Elephant Conservation Unit to run research and awareness programmes, as well as daily patrols for crop-raiding elephants and illegal poaching.
