The Emperor who Loved Elephants - Talk at the Royal Geographical Society

Almost 2,500 years ago lived India’s forgotten emperor Ashoka, an extraordinary ruler whose revolutionary ideas transformed the country. As well as devoting his reign to peace and the happiness of his people, Ashoka was an early champion of animal rights and loved elephants. So who better to chart the mixed fortunes of the Indian elephant from the days of Emperor Ashoka to the present than adventurer and Co-Founder of Elephant Family, Mark Shand (above left), together with author and historian Charles Allen (above right).

Their lively, illustrated talk will be introduced by explorer Benedict Allen, and will conclude with a grand auction of six unique and exquisite elephant blankets, in aid of Elephant Family.

Date: Tuesday 27th March (doors open 6pm)

Venue: Royal Geographical Society, 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR
