Once free to roam from China to Syria, the elephant today is confined to small forest areas scattered across India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, SW China, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Bhutan, Bangladesh.

Threats to the elephant's survival vary amongst the countries in which it lives. They are generally different to the problems facing African elephants.
